A stockport student will be taking part in a Camps International expedition to Peru in 2018 in a programme to help improve the lives of some of the poorest rural communities.
Megan Glover is in a team of 10 people, and will be taking part in projects through Camps International aimed at combating malnutrition, helping to build a new school, and developing community facilities.
She needs to raise £4,500 to pay for the travel, accommodation and food, as well as all of the vaccines and equipment necessary for one person for the trip.
Megan, whose father is a member of Marketing Stockport, will be undertaking projects that include education, housing, healthcare & sanitation, food & water security, environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods. This will involve building a new classroom and community facilities, creating a communal greenhouse to provide vegetables all year round, replanting to offset environmental damage and deforestation, and digging irrigation channels to provide a consistent supply of water for people, crops and animals.
Why is this trip important?
- 54% of rural communities live below the poverty line
- 33% of under 15’s are employed rather than at school
- 18% are malnourished and lacking fresh fruit and vegetables.
17 years old Megan currently attends Aquinas College where she studies Music, Biology and Geography. She is a keen saxophonist and attends the Junior Royal Northern College of Music. She is also a keen young leader at her local Brownie pack, so an ideal career would combine both music and working with children. The trip to Peru is a great opportunity to work with children in the impoverished Peruvian communities, help improve their standard of living and understand their amazing culture.
