MAN Diesel & Turbo UK Ltd (MDT-UK) are pleased to announce work has begun on a new Liverpool / Merseyside waste disposal facility based in Teesside. The power behind this plant will be supplied by MAN Diesel & Turbo (MDT).
In 2014, a 30-year waste management contract was agreed between SITA Sembcorp UK Ltd and Merseyside and Halton Waste Partnership to handle approximately 450,000 tonnes of landfill waste per year.
Energy recovery – The basis of this contract is to divert 90% of waste from landfill and utilise it as a fuel source as part of a process to produce energy from waste (EfW). This reduces greenhouse gas emissions created by landfill and displaces fossil fuel burn leading to Co2 reductions of approximately 127,335 tonnes per year. The process involves a steam turbine producing enough electricity to fully power the plant and returns any surplus electricity back to the National Grid.
The waste will be transported by rail from Merseyside to the Wilton International site in Teesside where the 35MWEfW plant is to be located.
Part of this contract involves a multi-million pound deal with MDT whose teams from both the UK and Europe are already working together to supply and install a generating set, condensing unit, lube oil system, complete instrumentation and control package as well as the 3,000 rpm DK 100/400REA3 steam turbine.
By utilising its resources from across the globe to work together on a project, MDT sends a positive message confirming its stand on the environment as well as assisting in the greening of the process industry.
The plant is expected to be fully operational by September 2016.
