The announcement is timely as next Friday sees the launch of The Manchester China Forum who aim is to increase international opportunities and promote Manchester’s position as the main UK gateway to China and the Far East from the North of England.
Statistics released recently by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) showed that Manchester has seen the largest rise in terms in passenger numbers over the last year, with an increase of 847,000 (4.5%) to 19.7million passengers.
The airport has its sights firmly fixed on going over the 20m passenger mark this year for the first time in five years this year, after adding 17 new destinations to its summer schedule.
The busiest month of 2013 is expected to be August with just over two million passengers jetting off for their Summer holiday. MAG has grown profits year-on-year by 8% and can expect a rise of 8% to 10% this year.
Mr Cornish also confirmed that MAG is closing in on plans for Airport City:
“We have spent the last 12 months getting planning permission for Airport City North and South. And in the next 12 weeks, we hope to name our development partners.”
