MAN Energy Solutions UK Ltd. who has one one its UK bases in Stockport, has recently won a lucrative order to supply nine engines for three patrol vessels for the Vietnamese Customs Department.
The engine concerned is the company’s renowned VP185 high-speed engine with the order consisting of 6 x 12VP185TCM and 3 x 18VP185TCM versions. Each engine will be built at MAN ES’s site in Colchester with the OEM (Original Engine Manufacturer) spare parts being stored in the company’s headquarters in Hazel Grove, Stockport.

Vietnam shares the oil, gas and marine life- rich South China Sea with several other countries. Given that a large part of Vietnam’s gross domestic product consists of agriculture, fishing is a huge economic factor for the country, making it vulnerable to the surrounding nations, so much so that sea boundaries were established in 1999.
In order to restrict smuggling, protect fishing grounds and oil resources, there is a general demand for fast patrol vessels in South East Asia.
With many advantages over similar types of engine – not least its power-to-weight ratio – the VP185 is an ideal engine when reliability, speed and manoeuvrability are vital for operations.
