The six Type 45 Destroyers in service with the Royal Navy are the most advanced Destroyers the nation has ever constructed. They are planned to have a power-upgrade to enhance their capabilities further and the Ministry of Defence is currently tendering for this “Power Improvement Programme” (PIP).
MAN Diesel & Turbo UK Ltd – MDT-UK – is offering the ONLY UK designed and built diesel-engines for this important programme. Three 18-cylinder VP185 engine packages are being offered for each vessel, and all would be built at its Stockport and Colchester locations.
The VP185 engine has extraordinary capabilities and has extensive experience in Naval Marine applications around the world. In addition to being designed and built in the UK, 70% of the supply chain components for the engine come from the UK, and many of these suppliers are SME’s based across our country.
Choosing a cutting-edge UK built and supported engine for the Type 45 Destroyer would not only create British jobs around the UK, but also help protect precious UK defence budgets from the effects of future pound sterling depreciations. Over the past year, UK defence budgets have been challenged by sterling’s depreciation as spare-parts have been purchased for previously imported defence-equipment.
Type 31 Frigate Programme
The Ministry of Defence is also currently planning to build at least five “Type 31” Frigates, with the first expected to enter service in 2023. MAN Diesel & Turbo can provide six diesel engines per vessel and support these from the UK. Four of these engines could also be designed and built in the UK for each vessel.
UK JOB CREATION AND INVESTMENT
In 2017, MAN Diesel & Turbo UK is investing over £2.4m in its production and overhaul facilities in Stockport and Colchester. This investment will increase in the event of winning the Type 45 and 31 programmes.
The Type 45 programme alone will substantially help protect at least 100 UK jobs and create a further 30 positions at Stockport and Colchester:
- Electrical Assembly Fitters
- Mechanical Assembly Fitters
- Experienced degree-qualified Mechanical Engineers
MAN Diesel & Turbo UK Ltd currently has 15 Advanced Apprentices and is now also investing further in Degree “Higher Apprentices”.
