Brendan McCormick, a Field Service Technical Support Apprentice with MAN Diesel & Turbo UK Ltd (MDT-UK) in Stockport, has just returned from an eleven-week stint at a power station in the Inner Hebrides.
Along with three other MDT-UK Service Engineers – Dave Wild, Simon Rutherford and Nick Day – Brendan was on hand to assist in the 24,000-hour overhaul of a Mirrlees K7 Major Engine at the Bowmore Power Station.
Over the eleven-week period, the engine was completely dismantled and all the major components overhauled on site. With the engine in a stripped condition, further investigation found that modifications were required not covered by the standard overhaul.
Alongside the extra work that was required, the power company needed the engine returning to service by the second week in September in order to supply power to both the Isle of Islay and nearby Jura whilst separate maintenance work was being carried out on the electrical supply line from the mainland.Despite this extra work and the time constraints, MDT-UK’s engineers ensured the engine was running without issues and was able to supply both islands with power on time during the mainland maintenance.
Brendan feels that the time spent on this project, and the experience gained from working alongside other, more experienced Service Engineers, has taught him many new skills and will stand him in good stead for the future.
