The China Shipping Container Line’s (CSCL) Globe carries an international crew of just 31 and negotiated its way to the UK by way of Malaysia before passing through the Suez Canal.
Weighing 184,000 tons and measuring 400m long (approximately four football pitches) and 59m wide the ship was built in South Korea and is capable of transporting 19,100 standard twenty foot equivalent units (teu’s) containers, some 1,000 more than the previous record.
This cargo equates to 156 million pair of shoes, 300 million electronic tablets or a staggering 900 million cans of beans.
However this trip would not have been possible had it not been for MAN Diesel & Turbo (MDT), whose giant MAN B&W 12S90ME-C engine powers the vessel.

With total output power of 69,720 kW at 69 rpm, this engine is sufficient for the ship to reach a service speed of 20.5 knots (38 km/h), with a top speed 22.0 knots (41 km/h) maximum and
10.5 knots 19 km/h, cruising.
Wayne Jones, (right) Senior Vice President, Head of Business Unit After Sales, MAN PrimeServ said;
“Once again MDT’s designers and engineers are to the forefront of ‘powering the world’. This is another fantastic achievement for our company which powers more than 50% of world trade.”
