Stockport schools are being encouraged to take part in Parliament Week, an annual programme of events and activities to inspire young people across the UK to participate in democratic life.
Founded in 2011, Parliament Week 2014 takes place across the UK between 14-20 November and is co-ordinated by the House of Commons with support from the House of Lords, which aim to raise awareness of Parliament and encourage people to engage with the UK’s democratic system and its institutions. A number of organisations, such as the UK Youth Parliament and the Hansard Society, are joining with Parliament Week to host events about democracy and political engagement.
Local schools taking part so far include Marple Hall High, St Christopher’s, and High Lane Primary.
Part of this year’s programme will focus on Do Democracy – a national social media campaign aimed at encouraging 16-24 year olds to get their voice heard in Parliament.

Andrew Stunell MP commented –
“I’m delighted that three of our local schools have already taken up the challenge of Parliament Week. It is a great opportunity for schools in Stockport to engage their pupils in democracy by putting on an event such as a debate, arrange a trip to Parliament or using the many interactive resources available on the Parliament Week website.”
Sir Andrew wrote to all schools in the Hazel Grove constituency last week, urging them to get involved with Parliament Week 2014.
