A £20m plan to regenerate a derelict industrial park in Stockport has been given a vote of approval from local people.
More than 70 per cent of people voted in favour of the plans to revitalise the partially dilapidated Brighton Road estate as part of a public consultation which ended on Friday.
Brighton Road Industrial Estate
sits off Didsbury Road
alongside the M60.
The consultation, held on behalf of Scarborough Development Group (SDG) the company behind the plans, included two events and a postal campaign and attracted considerable interest from the local community. A total of 76 people attended the two consultation events held at St Martin’s church in Didsbury Road and, of those who offered written feedback, more than 80 per cent said they were in favour of the plans.
Scarborough Development Group (SDG) acquired the Brighton Road industrial estate when its previous owners went into administration in 2010. The site had experienced years of under-investment and as a result some of the buildings are run-down and dilapidated. Some areas of the empty buildings are now beyond repair and it is not economically viable to bring them up to the required standards.
The proposals seek to transform the current, partially derelict site into a modern, landscaped retail park with a medium-sized supermarket, car showroom, petrol station, self-storage unit and coffee shop.
Considerable work has been undertaken to manage additional traffic and the entrance to the site will be widened to accommodate extra turning lanes and a traffic lighted junction.
It is envisaged that the total scheme will create around 140 full and part time jobs and statistics show that the vast majority of jobs will go to local people.
Lee Savage, Development Director at SDG said,
“We’re delighted at the turnout at the public consultation event and the general interest in the plans. The fact that the majority of those who gave their responses were in favour of our plans gives us clarity that what we are doing is not only needed but actively wanted too.
“Local people seemed very happy to see something finally being done to improve the overall look of the site and with the opening of a new supermarket, welcomed wider choice as a consumer. We are always committed to listening to the community at every step of the way and the feedback from the consultation will be used to inform the plans we bring forward.”
If the planning application to Stockport Council is successful, SDG hopes to go ahead with the exciting proposed developments as early as next year.
