Stockport Foodbank benefitted from £1,313 of funding from Vernon Building Society’s £10,000 Jubilee Fund which it used to provide mother and baby packs to families in need in Stockport.
With research by Stockport Council highlighting that up to 9,500 children may be living in poverty in the area, Stockport Foodbank provides 3 days of emergency food to help those in a crisis who have had a referral from either the council, Citizens Advice Bureau or a social worker.
Staff from the Society visited the Foodbank to meet with staff and volunteers and hear more about the work they do.
Marketing Co-ordinator, Lucy Turnbull, one of the members of staff who visited the Foodbank (pictured left with Nigel Tedford, Project Co-Ordinator) said:
“The ‘Mother and baby’ packs that Stockport Foodbank are providing to those in need are a great idea – everyone knows how expensive essentials such as nappies and baby food can be, so to bring up children on a low income when you’re struggling to put food on the table must be so difficult. It’s fantastic to see just how many families will benefit from the funding.”
Stockport Foodbank received the highest number of votes from readers of the Stockport Express which determined the amount of funding they were awarded from the Vernon’s Jubilee Fund.
The Vernon’s Jubilee Fund will be receiving applications from local charity and community groups again in 2014, interested groups are encouraged to visit the Society’s website for more information.
