A new community fitness programme called ‘I Wish I’d Tried’ has been launched by Life Leisure with the aim of inspiring more local people to get into sport thanks to £250k of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund.
I wish I’d tried is aimed at adults aged 25 and over and aims to get more people, more active, more often.
The team from Life Leisure, who run 15 sports and leisure facilities across Stockport, will be out and about in the area spreading the word about what activities are available and encouraging people to give it a go. They will be asking local residents about what type of activity they would like to do and the best time of day to take part, so classes and sports can be tailored to what the local community is looking for.
The programme has been running since September this year, when sessions were launched based on consultation with local groups and residents, but as the programme expands Life Leisure are keen to ensure they continue to offer what local people want.
The ‘I Wish I’d Tried” programme aims to encourage local Stockport people to participate in at least one, 30 minute sporting activity per week. The key is that people will be able to have a go at something new, something they wish they had tried before or perhaps it’s been a few years since they last did a sport and would like to take it up again.
There are lots of sports and sessions available from as little as a £1 such as Tai Chi, Football, Zumba, swimming and much more.

Ross McGuigan, Adult Participation Officer at Life Leisure said “We have been delighted to receive funding from Sport England’s Community Sports Activation Fund. It will allow us to help even more people to get active and take part in a sport or physical activity. With these roadshow events we are able to let people know what is available and importantly ask their opinion which will help us to make sure we are offering exactly what they are looking for. We really want to offer the right sessions to ensure residents can benefit from the scheme and start to regularly attend.”
