Stockport’s Life Leisure is helping the work of ‘Stroke Information’, an organisation set up to support stroke survivors, their families and carers by providing areas for drop-in centres at their facilities based in Avondale, Cheadle Heath and Hazel Grove.
Open meetings will provide stroke patients and their families with an opportunity to share their experiences and access support and practical advice to further assist them in their recovery.
Session Times:
The sessions are now up and running every Friday from 10am to 2pm at Life Leisure Avondale and every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm at Life Leisure Hazel Grove.
Left: The co-founders of not- for- profit, Stroke Information are Nick Clarke from Cheadle, a former Stockport County reserve footballer, who worked in IT and is a stroke survivor, and former electrical engineer and stroke survivor, John Lee, from Hazel Grove.
Just a year ago they set up a local stroke support group run by people who have had a stroke to provide a service network that they felt was lacking in the Stockport area, where there are over 5,000 registered stroke survivors.
Nick explains:
“We have been there we know how it feels. We know that being able to talk to someone who has been through a similar experience can really help. Both John and I, having recovered from a stroke, want to give something back and I would encourage anyone out there who has been affected by a stroke to come along and see if we can help.”
Michelle Childs, Senior Physical Activity Development Officer at Life Leisure commented,
“We are very pleased to assist Stroke Information to carry out its fantastic work in the local community and we want to help raise awareness of the support that they provide. Here at Life Leisure we take a holistic approach to well-being; we are not just about fitness for the few, we want to promote healthy lifestyles for everyone. Unfortunately, a stroke can strike anyone, any time, young and old. The survivor, their families and carers often struggle to cope and can feel very isolated. The charity and their drop-in sessions are one way for them to access a caring and informed support network.”
