A team of eleven Life Leisure employees are undertaking the gruelling challenge of cycling coast to coast (100 miles) in one day, to raise money for Sefton Village Orphanage in the Philippines.
The cycle takes place on Friday 26th July, when the team will set off from Whitley Bay on the east coast of England and cycle 100 miles to Silloth on the west coast.
Only one of the riders has ever competed the distance before, whilst raising money for the same charity. Steve Hoyles, currently based at Life Leisure Houldsworth Village, came up with the idea of the group cycle, which will involve all eleven staff completing the 100 miles individually.
Steve visited Sefton Village Orphanage last year as part of a team from Life Leisure to see first hand the difference the fund raising has made and also to educate the some of the teachers and children based at the orphanage on physical activity and sport. Many of the children have disabilities and illnesses that affect them daily and providing them with simple exercises can help their physical development and mobility.
The team will be made up of centre staff and head office based staff, many of whom have never even trained for a cycling event. Training has commenced and the riders are building themselves up with spinning sessions at Life Leisure centres as well as longer rides outside at the weekend.
The team will be supported on the day by a further five members of staff who will accompany them providing much needed nutrition as well as any bike repairs that may be required.
