Life Leisure played host to the British Weight Lifting Association final of their hugely successful Manchester Weight Lifting Series, a series that is literally going from strength to strength, hosting male and female competitors from as young as 10yrs to over 70yrs of age!
The hotly anticipated final event of the three stage competition ‘The Big Lift’, a traditional weight lifting competition was held at Life Leisure Houldsworth Village Gym in Reddish.
The first two stages of the competition held earlier in the year featured the ‘Snatch’, followed by the ‘Clean and Jerk’ but the final event involved competitors completing a traditional weight lifting competition which combines both lifts from the previous competition. The results are worked out using the weight of the athlete and the weight they lift, with the result calculated from the heaviest lift from their body to weight lifted ratio.
The individual results saw talented lifter Samantha Ogunyode win best overall female, powering 2.03 times her own bodyweight. Sam Twin was the best overall male when he lifted a phenomenal 2.83 times his own bodyweight.
In the hugely popular beginner categories, Shaun Grommell from Stockport Spartans impressed winning best male and up and coming athlete Amanda Morris from Lifting OL1, took the best female title.
The team competition was hotly contested with Stockport Spartans taking the top slot with 33.26 points, followed closely by Lifting OL1 with 30.27 points and Active Tameside came in 3rd with 17.9 points, making for a nail biting end to the day.
One of the outstanding performances of the final has to be the Masters title won by George Travis, who at over 70 years old lifted an incredible 94KG, qualifying him for the World Masters Weight Lifting Championships to be held in Finland.
British Weight Lifting Regional Development Officer, Andreas Michaelas commented on the competition saying,
“We had another fantastic turn out, with 30 athletes ranging from 10 to 70 years old and lots of spectators. The growth in participation and age ranges is really encouraging for the sport and shows just how popular it’s becoming in our region. We are proud to have the best facilities here at Houldsworth for our athletes and want to encourage everyone to join in, at every level. We can’t wait for the next competition which we are organising for later in the year.”
Chris Scott, General Manager at Life Leisure commented on the competition saying,
“We are so proud that we have hosted each stage of this brilliant competition, the amount of athletes taking part and the spectators have grown at each event showing how popular the sport is becoming. We want everyone to know that our fantastic facilities at Life Leisure are open to everyone, whether you want to compete or just take part in weight lifting to help with your health and fitness.”
