Bus services in Stockport will begin running from the town centre’s new transport interchange when it opens in less than week’s time on Sunday 17th March 2024.
The multi-million pound transport hub boasts 18 bus stands with the capacity for 164 departures an hour. Other facilities at the new interchange include a covered concourse with seated waiting areas, information screens showing real-time bus and train information and a ticket and information office. There are also fully accessible toilets and Changing Places facilities, lifts and ramps providing step-free access, wayfinding lines and tactile stand indicators. Cycle parking facilities can be found in the A6 archway along the Mersey Frontage, while a taxi rank for customers is located near the Interchange Pavilion exit on Mersey Square.
After the last timetabled bus services on Saturday 16th March, some existing nearby bus stops, including Heaton Lane’s temporary bus station, will close and services will transfer to the new Interchange, with TfGM having already run trials to prepare for the opening.
Access to Stockport Interchange will be from entrances on Mersey Square, Swaine Street and Daw Bank, and will be clearly signposted. From Monday 18th March, there will also be access to the interchange from the new rooftop park via both lifts and stairs. In April, the new spiral walking and cycling ramp will open and connect the park to the Mersey frontage and Trans Pennine Trail and walking links into the town centre.
Work on Stockport town centre’s new transport interchange began in 2021. The development also includes nearly 200 new build-to-rent homes being delivered by developer, CityRise which are due to welcome the first tenants later this year.
Chris Barnes, Head of Projects Group at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said:
“We’re really looking forward to welcoming the first bus passengers to this modern, attractive and accessible new interchange.
“It’s a big moment for Stockport and Greater Manchester and we want everyone to make the most of the new facilities on offer right from the outset.
“New timetables and other important information are now available so people can make themselves familiar with the new arrangement ahead of Sunday – ensuring their first journey is a smooth and enjoyable one.”
Passengers can find timetables, a list of bus services using the new interchange and further information – including which stops will be closing – on the TfGM website.
