Residents have received their final reminder to make sure they are on the new electoral register before it is published for the first time on December 1st.
Around 20,000 people in Stockport have not been matched against government records and therefore cannot be transferred automatically to the new register. These residents have been asked to provide some additional details to re-register and avoid losing their right to vote.
Once published, the new register is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime and acts as proof of identity, often being used by credit reference agencies and mortgage companies to check applications for loans or credit. Those residents who fail to re-register, if they have been requested to do so by the Council’s Elections Office, could be fined £80.
Eamonn Boylan, Stockport Council’s Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer, said:
“Since August thousands of people in Stockport have taken a few minutes out of their day to ensure they are on the electoral register. However there are still some residents who must provide some more details or risk losing their right to vote and a possible fine.
“So don’t lose out. You can now complete your registration is less than 5 minutes online or fill in the Invitation to Register form that was sent to you in August. Remember, being on the electoral register doesn’t mean you have to vote, it just gives you the opportunity should you wish to.”
On December 1st the new electoral register will be published. Residents can still register to vote after this date and monthly updates will be published on the first working day of each month.
