As Stockport’s business community prepares for recovery post-coronavirus, a group of business leaders from the town have collaborated with Stockport Council to launch a new website – www.skbusinessrecovery.co.uk to support businesses through the phases of recovery.

Latest UK data:

Total tests:                 12,320,708 tests have been taken or mailed out  + 131,121

Positive tests:            291,911 have tested positive + 538 in last 24 hours

Loss of life:                45,053 across all settings + 85

Cases in Stockport: 1,638 positive tests  + 1
Cases per 100,000: 5.8

*new data now shows the results of all testing, Pillar 1 in hospital and Pilar 2 drive through test centres and swab results by post).

In Stockport, number of positive cases per 100,000 is 5.8

Coronavirus accounted for about 6% of all deaths in the UK in the week to 3 July, according to death registration data. This rate has slowly fallen from just over 10% in the middle of June.

Data from the ONS shows that fewer than one in 2,000 now has the virus as the slow decline in case numbers continues.

BBC: UK payrolls shrink by 649,000 jobs in lockdown
The number of workers on UK payrolls has fallen by 649,000 between March and June, official figures indicate. The number of people claiming work-related benefits – including the unemployed – was 2.6 million.  However, the total was not as big as many feared, because large numbers of firms have put employees on the government-backed furlough scheme.  Economists say the full effect on employment will not be felt until the scheme ends in October.  Because of the effect of the furlough scheme on the employment market, analysts say the number of hours worked per week is currently a truer reflection of the impact of the coronavirus crisis. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that since the start of the pandemic, total weekly hours worked in the UK had fallen by a record 175.3 million, or 16.7%, to 877.1 million hours.

Family business Meeks Shoes re-opens in Stockport following surge of online sales during lockdown

Family-run footwear retailer Meeks Shoes has re-opened its Stockport store after receiving support from Barclays through the Government-backed Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS). A plan is now in place to open the business’ four other stores over the next fortnight, ensuring the safety of staff and customers is prioritised.  The loan, worth £150,000, has been used to cover rent, staff salaries and pay suppliers, as well as helping to support updates to the company’s website following a 200% increase in online sales during lockdown. The Stockport store gives customers an outlet to try on summer footwear before buying, as well as provide parents with the opportunity to browse the back-to-school range. Meeks Shoes is ensuring all staff wear the appropriate PPE, and that door staff, zoning and walkway systems mean social distancing will be safely managed.

100 days of Stockport Jobs Match site records growing demand
Stockport Jobs Match has revealed a growing demand from Stockport businesses for new staff as companies begin to reopen their doors after lockdown. 
100 days since launching, Stockport Jobs Match has allowed almost 100 employers in the borough to advertise vacancies and reach local job seekers.
After 60 days, Stockport Jobs Match had advertised 205 local vacancies, but at the 100 day mark, this has climbed to over 400 jobs with 96 employers. The service has currently over 900 jobseekers registered who are automatically notified of new jobs matching their interests and skills, and has been able to present over 5000 CVs to employers as a result, in addition to referring jobseekers to apply via employers’ own websites.

Stockport Council – phase 4 for Local Authority Discretionary Grant Scheme
As there continue to be funds available via the LAD scheme, a fourth phase of applications is being offered to businesses that meet the eligibility criteria set out in the guidance. Eligible businesses that meet the criteria for phases one two and three, which missed the application deadline for these phases, can make an application in phase four.  The deadline for submitting applications in phase four of the scheme is midnight on midnight on Friday 07/08/2020.  

In phase 4 there is also an opportunity to apply for a fixed grant of £2,000 for registered businesses based in Stockport that meet either of the following criteria:

• home based or self-employed that have not had access to any other financial support linked to Covid-19, that have had a reduction in income due to Covid-19
• fixed property costs below the £250 per month de minimis level set for earlier phases of the discretionary grant scheme and have not had access to any other financial support linked to Covid-19, that have had a reduction in income due to Covid-19.

CONSTRUCTION:

Construction furlough total rises above 750,000
Construction companies furloughed just over three-quarters of a million staff during the coronavirus outbreak from March to the end of June.

The number accounts for 59% of eligible staff with 75% of eligible firms using the coronavirus job retention scheme at some point in the last five months.
New figures from HM Revenue and Customs reveal that £2.6bn was paid out to 171,400 firms making claims for support for staff.  From now on the number of staff on furlough is expected to diminish sharply as contractors bring staff back into work or opt for redundancies to slim down for predicted lower levels of activity.

Surge in demand for groundworkers raises hopes of a “V-shaped” recovery for house builders.

Demand for groundworkers has passed the pre-lockdown peak according to analysis by Hudson Contract – the industry’s biggest payer of subcontractors.  Latest data shows the number of groundworks operatives paid in the week commencing June 29 reached 6,467.  This compares to the previous high of 6,261 in the week commencing March 16 and the low of 1,735 in the week commencing April 20.

Two new lenders accredited to the coronavirus business loan schemes
Two new lenders have been accredited to the British Business Bank’s coronavirus business loan schemes.  New Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) lender Bank of India will be able to provide financial support to smaller businesses across the UK that are losing revenue and seeing their cashflow disrupted as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.  Silicon Valley Bank, accredited under the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CLBILS), will be able to provide finance to midsized and larger UK businesses with a group turnover of more than £45m (the upper limit for the existing smaller-business focused CBILS).

Measures will protect the UK’s economy by preventing new burdens on business and provide certainty to support coronavirus recovery.

Travel Agency to expand across UK with more home-based workers
A high street agency has launched a homeworking division with aims to recruit a further eight staff this year.  Platinum World Travel currently has two home-based consultants, one each in Shropshire and Kent, and is now on the hunt for agents in locations across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.   

Director Arron Mitchell told TTG he was hoping to attract both shop-based staff who had been made redundant due to Covid-19, or current home-based agents looking to switch companies. Applicants should have “at least” five years-worth of experience in travel retail and be well travelled.

Car production is to resume at the Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port
Owner Groupe PSA has confirmed that the site, which makes the top-selling Astra model, will reopen on August 17.  Production was halted in March as social distancing measures were introduced throughout the UK due to the coronavirus pandemic. Around 1,100 staff at the Ellesmere Port plant will return to a shop floor that has seen more than 100 safety features introduced to protect workers following an easing of lockdown restrictions.  These include temperature checks and changes to shift patterns at the Cheshire site.

Boom for mortgage searches indicates strong housing market
Tuesday of this week was the busiest day of the year so far for searches for mortgages – widely seen as a good indicator of strong activity in the housing market. The flurry of activity, fuelled by the stamp duty holiday announced a week ago, was matched by a similar surge for buy to let searches according to mortgage technology platform Twenty7Tec.  Sales director Phil Bailey comments: “Since the stamp duty announcement, the market has really hit its stride. The last seven days have been the busiest for mortgage searches all year and we’re handling increased volumes of searches each day.”

AllClear Insurance has launched a new Covid-19 policy including medical expenses, cancellation cover, repatriation and recuperation costs.  The company, which specialises in providing cover for older travellers with pre-existing medical conditions, said the policy offered the “most wide-range set” of Covid-19 travel insurance measures.  The policy includes up to £15 million emergency cover for Covid-19, as well as cancellation and trip curtailment protection if a family member becomes ill with coronavirus or is required to quarantine.

Can you claim back Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay in the Rebate Scheme
From Tuesday 26 May 2020, small and medium-sized employers, with fewer than 250 employees, will be able to apply to recover the costs of paying coronavirus-related Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) payments they have made to their employees.
