Stockport Council is calling for local residents and businesses to get involved with this year’s VE Day celebrations while adhering to social distancing guidance.
The weekend of 8th – 10th May is the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (commonly known as VE Day), marking 75 years since the end of the Second World War.
This year, the government moved the May bank holiday to VE Day to allow the nation to remember the sacrifice so many made.
It had been hoped that communities could run a whole host of activities but given the restrictions due to COVID-19, these have had to be cancelled. However, nationally there are a wide range of digital resources for use on social media channels which can be used by schools, colleges and early years settings for them to use in the run up to VE Day.
1) A national toolkit has been developed and shows how people can get involved in marking #VEDay75. Stockport Council has already started to push messages out on its social media channels to let residents know how they can celebrate VE Day safely at home while adhering to social distancing measures. Resources include tips for hosting a tea party at home, colouring, bunting, creative challenge for children and more. Stories of Stockport’s local heroes will also be included in the Council’s social media channels in the run up to VE Day.
2) Nationally there is a call for people to share their stories by posting photos and stories of their families connection to WW2 on social media using #VEDay75.
3) A – Z graphics: shared on Instagram with information about VE Day and the end of the Second World War.
4) Dan Snow has a creative challenge for children: video on social media and challenge on the website. There will also be a week of history lessons on Dan Snow’s History Hit YouTube channel in the week running up to 8 May
If you do decide to join in with any of the activities please share your photos with Stockport Council, so they can share them with the wider community on our social media channels.
