Roving ‘We are Stockport’ reporter team Rachel Wallace and Dawn Bunnell have had a ‘whale’ of a time on their chippy taste trail Setting out to discover the finest fish and chip shop in Stockport.
The team were guided by public votes on twitter and facebook and taste-tested at Grandad’s in Stockport, Fletchers in Romiley, Ladybrook Fish Bar in Bramhall, Fiveways Fisheries in Hazel Grove and the Sun Hing in Portwood.
“It’s been great fun getting out and about to track down the best places to eat,” said Place Campaign Manager, Rachel, “Stockport has a great offering, and it’s incredible to see how different the tastes are between shops, whether it’s the batter used, type of potato or flavour of curry sauce! Picking the winner has been a real test as to be honest they all warrant a special mention.”
Catch of the Day is Fletcher’s in Romiley – a very traditional chip shop but with a few extras that puts it on the map in the neighbourhood.
Fletcher’s is followed closely by Grandad’s in Stockport Town Centre, getting the thumbs up on taste and choice. “We tried not to finish the whole portion,” said Rachel, “after all this is meant to be a taste test! But it proved impossible not to! My personal favourite is the light batter fish option. Even if I wasn’t watching my waistline, I’d choose that one as it’s not remotely greasy, it tastes fresh and healthy. Definitely to be recommended!”
Fiveways Fisheries, Hazel Grove has everything – great choice of different fish and chips, sauces and pies as well as its take away service.
Bramhall and Ladybrook Fish Bar – this chippy concentrates on good portions of fish and chips plus pies and all the trimmings.
Sun Hing, Portwood – A small and friendly takeaway service offering the full Chinese menu, rather than just a chippy dinner.
Concluded Rachel: “It’s been a culinary blast, and next time We are Stockport will be getting the rounds in on a micro-brewery tour of Stockport with the help of our local CAMRA team.”
