Upgrades are set to resume on the Hope Valley railway line between Stockport and Sheffield that aim to improve capacity, reliability and journey times along the route.
On both Sunday 5th and Sunday 12th November 2023, no trains will run between New Mills Central and Sheffield amid construction work to deliver a second platform and accessibility improvements at Dore & Totley station in South Yorkshire, as well as a new passing loop between Bamford and Hathersage stations in Derbyshire.
During the work, buses will operate between Sheffield and New Mills Central stations, and Sheffield and Stockport in place of Northern and East Midlands Railway trains respectively. Transpennine Express will be running a reduced service across it’s East-West services between Liverpool Lime Street and Cleethorpes which use the route and diversions are in place between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield that will bypass Stockport.
The improvement works taking place during November at part of a series of upgrades to the Hope Valley Line that will enable passenger services to overtake slower freight trains and remove bottlenecks on the route across the Peak District between Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire. The project began in Spring 2021 and is on track to complete by Spring 2024.
Phil Montgomery, Programme Manager from Network Rail said:
“Significant construction work has been in progress along the Hope Valley route since July 2022 and it has been great to see the visible progress that has been made so far. The construction of the new platform at Dore & Totley station is just one example of the project coming to life, with plenty more to come.
“Thank you in advance to the passengers and lineside neighbours for your ongoing patience as we continue to upgrade the Hope Valley railway.”
