Hallidays adopt dementia care charity for 2017/19

Stockport based Hallidays have adopted Weekend Day Centre for Dementia Care as their chosen charity and pledged their support for 2017/19.

Coinciding with National Dementia Awareness week, Hallidays team members voted from a range of local charities, with the Weekend Day Centre for Dementia Care emerging as the clear winner.

The centre started in 1991 and offers a range of fun, social activities at weekends and bank holidays to support local people living with dementia and enables their carers to take a break. The centre works with people with different types of dementia, many of whom have additional complex needs including Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease or brain injuries. The centre provides a wide range of fun activities and lively entertainment, such as trips out, celebration days, and dancing and singing events. It also welcomes carers to attend, if they wish to socialise with other carers while their loved ones are being looked after.

In 1999, their work gained national recognition winning first place in the Carers Scheme category at the Social Care Awards.

Hallidays have a long history of fundraising for local charities. Most recently their team members raised £5,500 for Beechwood Cancer Care by completing a marathon, an abseil, zip wire challenge and a female boxing competition. Previously Hallidays team have raised similar amounts to support the work of Beacon Counselling and The Seashell Trust.

Hallidays’ daredevils are now planning a range of fundraising activities for the centre, including Tough Mudder and a wing-walk!

This will support the centre with their exciting new plans – relocating into their own premises and expanding their service to support more people.

It is currently estimated that there are 3,800 people in Stockport with dementia, which is expected to rise to over 5,000 by 2025 if prevalence rates remain the same and the population changes as expected (Source: Stockport Dementia Strategy).

The dementia care centre is planning to introduce new, themed mid-week sessions bringing together people with a shared interest e.g. crafts or woodwork, to enjoy their hobby together.
