Grassroots swapped their recruiter suits for chef ‘s pinafores when they took over the kitchen at The Wellspring in Stockport.
Corporate Social Responsibility is a vital ingredient in Stockport based Grassroots Recruitment’s company values, fundraising and contributing time to make a difference to the lives of others. Despite being a small team, running an effective Employee Volunteer Scheme means they can make a big contribution to our local community.
Four members of the Grassroots team volunteered in the kitchen at the Wellspring Stockport, their chosen Charity of the Year. The centre is open 365 days of year providing food, drink, clothing, medical care and lots of advice for homeless and disadvantaged people.

Caroline, Molly (above), Theo and Yvonne from Grassroots were introduced to the golden Thursday team of experienced weekly volunteers, some of whom have been volunteering at the charity for over 25 years! They were shown around the kitchen, briefed on the jobs for the day and individually assigned roles to complete the tasks.
The group kick-started the busy morning by preparing sandwiches, making soups and getting ready to begin serving the food to the visitors.
Most of the food provided is donated by local organisations, shops and restaurants in the Stockport area. It is fundamental to the overall running of charity, as it allows the centre to serve healthy, fresh and consistent morning and evening meals to the homeless. To support this, Grassroots also donated £200 to the charity to help fund the food and essentials on the day.
Jonathan Billings, CEO at The Wellspring said:
We would like to say a big thank you to all the staff at Grassroots Recruitment for supporting The Wellspring as your local charity of the year for 2018.
The recent team of volunteers were a great help in our kitchens preparing and serving a meal to everyone who attends the centre. I very much look forward to meeting more of the staff from Grassroots and working together again later in the year.”
Once the Kitchen Takeover was well underway, they were given the opportunity to get to know more about the volunteers who work extremely hard to provide the best possible service. It was really inspiring to see such devoted and passionate people giving up their time to help others.
Caroline Patten, Operations Director at Grassroots said:
It was great to be involved with the Kitchen Takeover Project and for the Grassroots team to help out our Charity of the Year. We got a glimpse of the hard work and dedication that goes into servicing “guests” and the sense of pride volunteers take in supporting the community.
With staff commenting how much they’d enjoyed giving their time to something so worthwhile, I was proud of their hard work and how well they came together as a team. We’ll definitely be volunteering again soon, and I would highly recommend any business get involved.”
Needless to say, corporate volunteering was a valuable and rewarding experience for the Grassroots team, gaining a deeper understanding of how time and donations make such a difference to the lives of those in need.
