Stockport Council is providing grants of up to £1,000 through the One Stockport Local Fund to open more buildings in the borough as ‘warm spaces’ for those struggling with the cost-of-living this winter.
The launch of the grant scheme this year follows a significant response from Stockport communities during Winter 2022/23 to support those in the borough who were struggling with rising energy costs.
The council is funding additional warm spaces alongside its public buildings such as leisure centres, libraries and community centres. Libraries will also act as hubs of advice, information and guidance where warm spaces local to that library can signpost residents for further support.
The warm space fund is now open will be accepting applications until 31st December, or until all funds have been allocated.
Cllr Jilly Julian, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources at Stockport Council, commented:
“We want to make sure that all our residents have a place they can keep warm this winter, and know how to access vital information and advice to get the support they need during this cost-of-living crisis. I know how important and appreciated warm spaces were during the winter of 2022/23, so we want to make sure we keep a similar offering as part of our winter planning this year.
“That’s why we want to make sure that our voluntary, community and faith groups have access to the resources they need, through Spend Well Live Well grants, Town of Culture grants and now, Warm Spaces funding. If you’re a local organisation who could help to keep Stockport residents warm and well this winter, we want to hear from you. We are keen to hear from new organisations as well as warm spaces from last year who want to build on their success.”
The warm spaces grant scheme is part of a wide range of measures being put in place by the council and its partners to support residents to keep warm and well through the winter.
Stockport residents can also access advice and information on the cost-of-living online hub or by calling the cost-of-living helpline on 0161 474 2140. Lines are open Monday – Friday, 9.30am – 4pm.
