Stockport-based WFEL has been awarded the Environmental Business Pledge Gold Award for its commitment to creating a cleaner, greener borough.
By using the scheme’s free environmental audits, WFEL – a world leader in military and disaster relief bridge manufacture and repair – identified over £60,000 of cost savings by making small low or no cost changes including installing low wattage lighting, high speed roller shutter doors and water saving taps.
WFEL’s commitment to improving their environmental credentials saw them implement the changes identified in their audit and gain the Gold Award only seven months after embarking on the scheme.
The Pledge is a free advice and award scheme promoted by Stockport Council in partnership with Manchester City Council and delivered by Groundwork.
Councillor Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Regeneration at Stockport Council, said:
“Congratulations to WFEL on their Gold Award. This highlights how companies, both large and small, can benefit from the work of the Environmental Business Pledge and the savings it can bring. The Council is keen to support local businesses that are committed to making environmental improvements. The initiative is part of the Council’s commitment to tackling climate change and reducing waste.”
Wayne Schofield, HSE Manager at WFEL, added:
“Continual improvement to environmental efficiency and improving the local environment to benefit all is a priority for WFEL. The Environmental Business Pledge helped us identify and implement several small changes to improve our environmental credentials. We built on this commitment by installing a drainage area aimed at preventing any leaks and spills from skips entering the local environment, whilst investing our own money into land remediation.”
WFLE added the Environmental Business Pledge to the internationally-renowned ISO14001 for Environmental Management.
The Pledge supports Stockport’s businesses to improve their environmental performance whilst saving them money. By joining the Environmental Business Pledge scheme, businesses receive free environmental resource efficiency audits, and detailed advice and support on recycling, reducing energy usage and bills, minimising water use, producing less waste, and reducing their carbon footprint.
