GM Walking are looking for Greater Manchester residents to share their thoughts on how to get residents walking more, and have set out an ambition of population scale participation in walking a mile a day.
GM Walking have commissioned Collaborate Out Loud to engage with communities in the city-region to hear what residents think would help them to work more often, and explore what a mile means to them. The information gathering is the first phase in the Getting Greater Manchester Moving One Mile at a Time project. Once information has been gathered, resources will be created to help the city-region’s residents walk a mile a day in their communities or workplaces.
The research phase of the project aims to understand:
- What helps people to walk more?
- What gets in the way of walking?
- What support and resources people would like to help them walk more
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, currently research is being conducted online, including using discussion boards, a Google Forms survey, and social media via the hashtag #GMDailyMile on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Collaborate Out Loud and GM Walking are also hosting a Tweet Chat on 4th June between 8 and 9pm to bring together individuals and community groups who want to take part in a live discussion.
The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown has seen an increase in active travel (walking and cycling) in Greater Manchester, and it is hoped this will continue as restrictions are lifted. By encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transport and active travel, Greater Manchester is looking to Build Back Better as part of its recovery plans while supporting the ambition to be carbon neutral by 2038 and honour its commitment to become a walking and cycling city-region.
