Stockport Council is urging residents not to abandon their real Christmas trees this year, but to give them a new life by recycling.Chopped up Christmas trees can be put it in the green wheelie bin, or placed whole alongside the green food caddy for the first green waste collection of the New Year.
Saving a tree from landfill saves the borough money. It also provides Greater Manchester with a supply of quality soil enricher which people can now buy to use in their gardens. 20 and 40 litre bags of Revive Multi-Purpose Compost, made from residents very own food and garden waste can be bought from the recycling centre at Bredbury Parkway.
If you’re looking to have a green 2014, here are five New Year resolutions:
- Begin recycling if you don’t already. You can start small. Try putting aside your plastic bottles for your brown bin. Plastic bottles can take up to 500 years to decompose if they’re not recycled! Remember the only plastic we can recycle is plastic bottles.
- If you already recycle, step it up a notch. Aluminium foil may be easy to scrunch up and throw away but every bit can be recycled in your brown bin. If you’re looking for inspiration check out residents’ top tips on the Council website.
- Resolve to purchase more items made from recycled materials. Paper towels, toilet paper, aluminium cans, cereal boxes, and many other paper products fall into this category.
- Where possible purchase items in bulk to reduce packaging waste.
- Recycling a tonne of paper spares 17 trees, so don’t forget your blue bin! If you’ve been inundated with junk mail this Christmas, contact the Mailing Preference Service to remove your name from mailing lists. Register online at www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/ or call 0845 703 4599.
