From 6 April 2016 all dog owners will be required to have their pets’ microchipped and owners who fail to comply with the new legislation could face a fine of up to £500.
The new law aims to reduce a rise in stray dogs nationally.. In Stockport, the Dogs Trust has made it easier for residents to comply and have provided Stockport Council’s Dog Warden Service with a supply of free microchips for all dogs in the borough.
Microchipping permanently identifies a dog. A microchip – about the size of a grain of rice – is implanted under the skin of a dog by injection, usually within the scruff of the neck. The owner’s contact details are then recorded against the number of the microchip and stored on a national database.
If a dog was to stray and was found by a warden or a vet, it would be scanned for a microchip so the owner can be contacted and be reunited with their pet as soon as possible.
The new law aims to reduce a rise in stray dogs nationally.
For more information about this service and pre-organised events or to book an appointment at a microchipping clinic, phone 0161 474 4207 or email dog.warden@stockport.gov.uk
If your dog is already microchipped, it is essential to keep your details up to date – please contact the relevant microchipping company if your details have changed.
