A government scheme requiring petrol stations across the UK report their prices in real time is helping drivers access the cheapest fuel through price comparison tools.
A growing number of apps and websites are available for drivers to help them shop around for the best price on petrol and diesel at the pump without having to drive between forecourts, which include Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com and RAC Fuel Watch.
Prices come from data gathered through the government’s Fuel Finder scheme. The scheme places a mandatory obligation on all petrol filling stations in the UK to report their fuel prices within 30 minutes of any change.
Around 90% of petrol stations are already signed up to Fuel Finder, and wall outstanding stations are now required to start sharing prices or risk enforcement by the Competition and Markets Authority.
A new GOV.UK page with information to help drivers easily access Fuel Finder data has launched to help drivers shop around for the best deals at the pump. It comes as fuel prices have begun to rise sharply as the global oil trade has been severely impacted by conflict in Iran, raising the importance for drivers of getting the price at the pump.
Luke Bosdet, Road Fuel Expert at the AA, said:
“This is the first time that pump prices have coincided with price transparency set up by the UK government. This has shown drivers where to save money either locally or out on the open road. Use of the AA App’s fuel-price search tool has shot up 500% in the last month, such is the demand from motorists.”
