Stockport Council has begun the latest phase of essential structural repairs to the Merseyway Car Park in Stockport town centre.
Work to the ‘Orange Zone’ of the car park (the main area of parking accessed from St Petersgate and the bridge over Chestergate) will take place from July through to autumn 2023 and will include structural repairs to the facility and waterproofing works to prevent further deterioration of its condition and ensure its continued safety for those visiting the town centre.
Entry to the car park from this access will remain open for the majority of the works but some areas of the car park, and the exit over the bridge, will need to be closed to facilitate the works.
There will still be approximately 1,000 spaces open at all times within Merseyway and Redrock Car Park, with other car parks available across the town centre for those visiting the town centre.
A £5.5 million programme of repairs to the Merseyway Car Park were approved by Stockport Council in February 2022, funded through borrowing to be repaid through revenue from parking charges. Work is expected to complete in 2024 and, in addition to structural repairs, will allow for remarking and improvements to pedestrian access and accessibility for disabled visitors to take place. Plans could also see solar panels and electric charging provision installed via the Greater Manchester Unlocking Clean Energy project.
Improvements to the car park aim to support the borough’s ongoing £1 billion regeneration of the town centre by securing the future of the facility to support businesses in the Merseyway Shopping Centre and wider town centre.
