Stockport Council has scooped a much sought after adoption award for their collaborative work with three other local authorities.
The Council teamed up with three neighbouring authorities for the Four4Adoption campaign to recruit more adopters for children and to improve the adoption service.
The campaign greatly impressed the judges at the National Adoption Week Awards 2013 winning the Local Authority Adoption Service of the Year award.
Councillor Wendy Meikle, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People, said:
“I’m delighted that this highly successful initiative has been recognised by winning this much sought after national award. The recruitment campaign was an excellent example of effective partnership working with our neighbouring local authorities.
“There are no blanket bans in adoption, so please don’t think we’ll turn you down because you’re over 50, single, or don’t own your own home. What we really need are people who can offer a child or sibling group a loving and supportive family for life. People who can help a child recover from the reasons why they came into care and can help them go on to thrive in a new family.
“Initially, we are simply asking people to come forward and find out more about adoption. If you think you might have what it takes, please pick up the phone and call the Council’s Adoption Team or visit the website.”
Since the campaign was launched in May 2013, there have been over 200 enquiries to the four local authorities about adoption.
