Stockport Council’s Cabinet has agreed to progress with new partnership with electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure provider, Iduna, that will bring more charging facilities to the borough.
In a meeting on 6th December, the council’s Cabinet gave the green light for proposals that will see Iduna install EV charging points at council-owned car parks across the borough as part of the Be.EV network of charging points. 21 sites have been identified in all parts of the borough as preferred locations for charging bays, with Iduna leasing at least two parking bays from the council on a 20 year term.
While locations of EV charging infrastructure may change due to any technical limitations of installing them at preferred sites, council car parks expected to benefit from new facilities are:
- Massie Street, Cheadle
- Bruntwood Park, Cheadle
- Church Road, Cheadle
- Finney Lane, Cheadle
- Church Road/Woods Lane, Cheadle
- Mellor Road, Cheadle
- Bramhall Precinct
- Commercial Road East, Hazel Grove
- Torkington Road, Hazel Grove
- Caroline Street, Edgeley
- Banks Lane, Offerton
- Marple Memorial Park
- Romiley Precinct
- Romiley Station
- Ashbrook Lane, Reddish
- Rupert Street, Reddish
- Didsbury Road, Heaton Mersey
- Redrock NCP
- Merseyway NCP
- Churchgate
- Knightsbridge
The council’s agreement with Iduna will bring EV charging facilities to parts of Stockport where there is presently no or very limited provision, such as Edgeley and Romiley, and will more than double the number of EV charging facilities available for public use.
The borough currently has just 25 public EV charging points, despite having some of the highest rates of electric car registration in the country. In a study into EV infrastructure across the North of England, Transport for the North has previously identified Stockport as among the worst local authorities for the provision of charging facilities.
