Stockport Council has secured funding to carry out replacement work on a bridge in the Town Centre over the River Mersey.
The project will involve the replacement of the existing concrete structure which forms part of Lancashire Bridge which was originally constructed in 1877 with a reinforced concrete widening structure added in 1937.
Councillor Iain Roberts, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said:
“I’m delighted that the Council gained funding for this exciting project from the Department for Transport, through the Local Pinch Point Fund.”
The bridge is a square single span arch structure which comprises three arch sections with a skewed reinforced concrete portal frame on the east side of the arch.
Recent inspection and assessment of the reinforced concrete portal bridge showed that work was needed.
Work will begin on the project in April 2014 with the diversion of underground utilities. Highway realignment works will then follow and run in parallel with the bridge replacement. All works are expected to be completed by January 2015.
During the project congestion along Warren Street should be expected.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
