Stockport Council has recently invested in the refurbishment of the 200 year old listed building, Merchants House, in Stockport, providing small, quality office space in the heart of Stockport’s town centre.
The Council owned building is located in the Market Place opposite the Market Hall. It provides modern accommodation for small businesses that require a town centre location on flexible terms.
The refurbishment has brought improvements to both offices and communal areas providing 10 office units suitable for between 2 and 4 people.
New lighting and painting has been completed throughout, with the centre benefitting from fresh external signage giving the centre a modern feel internally, yet keeping the history and character of the external style of building. The building was originally occupied by the Post Office in 1820s and subsequently occupied by the Bank of Stockport in the 1850s.
Centre Manager Ken Hill, said:
“I’m delighted that Stockport Council has invested in Merchants House. The atmosphere has been transformed and the whole place feels modern, lighter and brighter than it was before. Existing clients are delighted. The offices in Merchants House are ideal for small and new businesses looking for a central location that is something just that little bit different.”
Malcom Evans from MaST International Group Limited based in Merchants House, said:
“I have found that Merchants House has always been a good base for a small consultancy type practices like my own – in the centre of Stockport. The recent refurbishment means we can now portray a much sharper image to our clients.”
One of the Council’s regeneration priorities is to create a vibrant retail, leisure and residential destination in and around the Market Place and Underbanks area and the refurbishment of Merchants House is a significant step towards achieving this.
Paul Lawrence, Corporate Director at Stockport Council, said:
“The Market Place and Underbanks area is a very attractive and unique part of Stockport town centre. The Council is committed to working with local landlords and partner organisations so this area becomes a thriving hub for young entrepreneurs and independent retailers.”
