A consultation on plans to extend the remit of Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) to deliver town centre regeneration and new homes East of the A6 Wellington Road will close on 26th June 2025.
The Stockport MDC was launched in 2019 and has made rapid progress delivering on its aims to accelerate Stockport Council and GMCA’s regeneration vision in the Town Centre West area. In just six years, 1,200 of the target 4,000 new homes have been built or are under construction, alongside continued development of Grade A office space at Stockport Exchange and a new two-acre park and bus terminus, set to also welcome a tram connection.
Stockport Council and GMCA are now proposing expanding the boundary of the MDC area to cover the entire town centre and enabling a greater delivery of new homes. Town centre living at this scale is rare in the UK, but proponents of the plans believe it is crucial to the long term challenges of housing a growing population, supporting local high streets, and achieving net zero.
Plans would expand the current MDC area (outlined in red in the map below) to encompass parts of the town centre East of the A6 in an area approximately bounded by St Mary’s Way and the A560 as far as Portwood Roundabout (marked in blue).

Public consultation on the proposed MDC expansion opened on 15th May and will run until 26th June 2025.
Feedback can be sent via the GM Consult website, where further information about the plans and details of alternative ways to express views can also be found.
