Community groups and non-profit organisations in Stockport and across the city-region are invited to apply to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) for funding to set up a bike library.
37 bike libraries have already been established across Greater Manchester and allow people of all ages to have access to a bike for free. TfGM has secured funding to enable a further five sites to be set up across the city-region, and will award up to £5000 funding for the each successful applicant.
The aim of each scheme is to boost people’s access cycles, build their confidence on a bike and explore the cycling routes available on their doorstep.
The TfGM grants support groups in setting up a new scheme or broadening their current provision, with a focus on a sustainable scheme model where bikes are donated, fixed up and utilised, giving pre-loved bikes a new purpose.
And while most schemes are currently focused on two-wheels, there’s a commitment to ensure people who require a non-standard cycle are supported. This will be done by gradually expanding the options available at bike libraries or working closely with organisations such as Wheels for All.
Rachel Scott, TfGM’s Active Travel Manager, said:
“Bike libraries are already boosting people’s access to cycles across Greater Manchester and I am pleased to confirm that the next round of funding is now open to applicants.
“If you’re part of a group or an organisation in the heart of a community you could be ideally placed to run a bike library and help more people in your area benefit from cycling.”
Successful applicants will also benefit from support from TfGM’s Active Travel team and will receive a branded marketing ‘pack’, which provides consistency for all new bike library hosts. The closing date for applications is Friday, 9 August.
