Stockport Council’s Planning and Highways Committee is set to decide on a 66-apartment retirement scheme in Cheadle Hulme when its members meet on 18th August.
Plans are being brought forward by Flintshire based Anwyl Homes, who acquired the site off Mill Lane, a former garden centre, in early 2021. The developers hope to deliver 36 two-bedroom and 30 one-bedroom apartments for over 55s in a three-storey block; parking and landscaping are also including in the plans.
The council’s planning officers have recommended approval for the scheme, however, councillors on the Planning and Highways Committee deferred their decision in their 7th July meeting and await clarification from developers on accessibility concerns for disabled residents, as well as ambulance access. On 2nd August, Anwyl provided annotated site plans to address respond to issues raised in the Committee meeting, including a secondary rear entrance with level access and intercom system.
Councillors are now expected to approve plans, following the clarifications from developers. However, as the site is located on Green Belt land, the scheme would then be passed to the Secretary of State for Housing, Greg Clarke; the Housing Minister is able to intervene when Green Belt land is to be released for developments of this scale.
The Cheadle Hulme scheme is one of two retirement developments planned for Stockport being brought forward by Anwyl Homes. The North Wales based developer has also submitted a planning application for a similar sized scheme on the former Focus School site in Heaton Mersey.
Stockport Council’s Planning and Highways Committee will next meet on 18th August.
