The Mayor of Stockport 2012/2013
My chosen Charities are The Tree House and Stockport Without Abuse, I wanted to support smaller charities which are based in Stockport, most of the fund raising will be financed by Stockport residents and I wanted to keep the money raised by those people in the community in Stockport.
After hearing about a young boy from my granddaughters School, I wanted to support the Treet House. The boy was given bus fare each day but cycled to school and saved the fares which he donates to the Tree House, I was most touched by his act of Kindness. Also I thought that it was a really deserving charity as lots of people either know or have had a child that has been a patient at the Tree House.
Stockport Without Abuse, the re-branded Stockport Women’s Aid, again a smaller local based facility with charitable status. I have been the elected member for the Stockport Abuse Forum for the past 9 or so years I guess this was an obvious choice , my involvement has been to support and raise the profile of this very valuable organisation. The support that is given to women and also men is tremendous and again a locally based organisation. Fund raising so far has included a sponsored bike ride by Cllr David Wilson, he raised almost £500, I have had some donations including a very generous one of £500 from Morris and Son a sweet maker based near the Pyramid in Stockport, I hold raffles before Council, the Councillors have been very generous with their financial support, we had envelopes on the tables at my Mayors Dinner this brought almost £1000.
I have had an abseil, I hadn’t planned on taking part as I am terrified of heights, a reporter contacted the Mayors Office asking if he could interview me after the abseil !!!!!!!!!! on the morning of the abseil I had 2 vacancies so without thinking asked for sponsorship, that was the most scariest thing I have ever done. There was no escaping once I had reached the roof of Stopford House. The instructor would not take no for an answer…… as I reached the ground the reporter was waiting for me, phew, thank goodness I managed to do the abseil. This will have raised almost £5000, I have invited all the schools to take part in hat making competition, out of all the schools in Stockport only 3 took part, however we had a fabulous evening with the most amazing hats to support the competition I asked if schools would wear white, 7 schools got involved with this, I am in the process of visiting schools to personally thank them, again this raised around £1,100.
We had a ‘Currie and Spice ‘ night , Edwina Currie was the guest speaker at the Spice Tower she was amazing and kept us all amused by her stories, we raised over £500. I had the proceeds of a Car Boot sale held by Help the Hatters, this was around £1000. I have the Ashton on Mersey Show Band performing on 1st March at the Town Hall, I am hoping for a sell out here, and also planning another abseil for early April, so if anyone is interested please let me know, John Pollard our Coroner has put his name down , he was the first , so you will be amongst good company.
Rainbow 88 are hosting a St Patrick’s Day fund raiser for me. I am hoping to raise around £40.000, the Tree house will consult with me about an item or something which will be used to make life happier for the young people and the Stockport Without Abuse will hopefully be able to pay a worker for a year.
