South Manchester coffee shop, Mercado, has been appointed as the operator of the café that will open in Stockroom, Stockport’s new cultural landmark that opens on 24th May.
Part of Stockport’s £1 billion town centre regeneration, Stockroom is designed to bring people together through culture, learning, and creativity. The café will bring a unique food and drink offer to Stockroom, featuring specialty Peruvian Arabica coffee and a menu including Argentinian empanadas, Italian paninis, delicious pastries, as well as halal options.
Mercado will be part of Stockport’s growing food and drink scene, which was recognised last year when the town was named Foodie Neighbourhood of the Year at the Manchester Food and Drink Awards. From family favourites to independent gems and popular events like Foodie Friday, Stockport has become a top destination for food lovers, and Mercado’s arrival brings another exciting independent venue to the town centre.
Mercado has built a strong reputation in Didsbury, where it has become a neighbourhood favourite. Recognised with multiple TripAdvisor Awards (2022, 2023, 2024) and ranked as Manchester’s top spot for tea, coffee, and desserts, it has also secured a place in the finals of the England Business Awards for “Best Café.” Mercado has firmly established itself as a go-to destination for coffee lovers and food enthusiasts alike.
Cllr Helen Foster-Grime, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport at Stockport Council, said:
“This is more good news for Stockport. Mercado is known for its brilliant coffee, delicious food, and warm, welcoming atmosphere. We’re sure they’ll be a huge hit with visitors to Stockroom, making it an even more inviting space for people to meet, relax, and enjoy everything on offer. It will be great to see it come to life when the doors open in May!”
Steven Hadjiyianni, owner of Mercado, said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to be opening in Stockroom. It’s a fantastic venue in the heart of Stockport, and we can’t wait to be part of such an exciting and growing food scene. We’ve built something really special in Didsbury, and we’re looking forward to bringing the same passion, great coffee, and warm hospitality to Stockport.”
Stockroom is Stockport’s new creative and cultural centre and will be a place to connect, create, and experience culture in new ways, and, alongside the Mercado café, Visitors can look forward to:
- Additional town centre library facilities offering a modern, welcoming space for reading, learning, and discovery.
- A dedicated children’s creative learning space, encouraging young imaginations to flourish through interactive experiences.
- Stockroom Studios, a multi-purpose events space that will host a diverse year-round programme of activities.
- Stockport’s historical archives, preserving the town’s rich heritage and making it accessible to all.
