British Weight Lifting has joined forces with Stockport’s Life Leisure to bring weight lifting to the North West by opening a ‘one of a kind’ North West academy at Houldsworth Village gym in Reddish.
Weightlifting is a longstanding Olympic sport and as part of the legacy from the London 2012 Games, some of the equipment used at the world’s biggest sporting event, such as benches, weights and chalk bins have been recomissioned and installed at the Houldsworth gym.
The Weight Lifting centre will be headed up by Andreas Michaelas, British Weight Lifting’s Regional Development Officer. Andreas who has competed Nationally to Commonwealth Youth level, commented, “This is a really exciting project for British Weight Lifting and Life Leisure, working in partnership to deliver the sport in a ‘1st of a kind’ centre which is available to individuals at all levels. The new performance zone is for the benefit of everyone from elite competitors to a complete beginner who’s just come to the gym to try something new.”
Chris Scott, General Manager at Life Leisure Houldsworth explained, “This is a superb opportunity for everyone to get involved and this is a real asset for Life Leisure, Stockport and the North West. We know that people often connect weight lifting with big muscular guys but we want to change that perception, it’s an excellent form of exercise which our members will be able to benefit from.”
