Stockport Council has submitted a planning application for new high quality sports and leisure facilities in Brinnington.
These new proposed facilities are part of a package of interdependent development projects which form the Brinnington Regeneration Plan which is part of the Council’s ‘Investing in Stockport’ programme.
Countryside Properties, who are the Council’s preferred developer for housing in Brinnington, have also submitted a planning application for around 280 new family houses at various sites across the area.
If approved, the new £5 million sports and leisure facilities (artists impression above) would be located in Brinnington Park, and would replace the existing, out-dated Lapwing Centre.
The new centre will be managed by the Council’s partner, Life Leisure.
Located within Brinnington Park, the new centre will include facilities for badminton, five-a-side football, basketball, netball, volleyball, indoor hockey and a range of other sports and activities.
The centre will feature a state of the art dance and aerobic studio, a 40 station fitness suite and a new home for Brinnington Boxing Club. There will also be a community room with crèche for events, classes and meetings, plus additional car parking, new changing facilities and a new 3G football pitch.
A separate application has been submitted for a new bowling green. This would replace the existing green in Brinnington Park and be located to the rear of Brinnington Hall Care Home.
Councillor Iain Roberts, Stockport Council’s Deputy Leader, said:
“Brinnington is one of the Council’s Priority Neighbourhoods and the new centre will encourage greater participation in sport through affordable facilities, accessible to all sections of the community. The significant investment required to build these new facilities demonstrates the Council’s continuing commitment to addressing inequalities in the borough.”
The Council as the Local Planning Authority will be conducting statutory consultation on both planning applications.
Should the planning applications be approved, it is likely that work would start on construction of the new leisure facilities around Spring 2015 with the new centre completed by Summer 2016.
