An appeal has gone out for information on employees of the former Stockport County Borough Council who lost their lives during World War One.
Terry Jackson, a member of Stockport’s 2014-2018 Commemorations Committee, is attempting to find out more about the 48 men who names are inscribed on the World War One Memorial in Stockport Town Hall.
Terry has gathered information on most men but would be grateful if anyone has information, stories, or family background on M.Allart and R.Forster in particular.
Councillor Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said:
“I would like to thank Terry for undertaking this important piece of work, and any information – however small it is – will be invaluable. The Council intends to produce a book of remembrance which will be put on display on the marble staircase in the Town Hall for visitors and staff on those brave men who served our country and the lasting legacy they provided for today’s residents.”
To arrange to see the names on the war memorial or if you help, email Sue Shore at sue.shore@stockport.gov.uk
Special events and activities will take place in Stockport until 2018 to commemorate local people involved in the war. For more information, please go to www.stockport.gov.uk/ww1
