Britannia Group has set out plans to convert the former Stockport Probation Centre in the town centre into new apartments.
The developer is proposing converting the building on High Street, Stockport town centre, into 45 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The building, formerly a grocery wholesaler, was used for the town’s probation services from 1983 but has been empty from September 2023.
The developer’s plan to restore the historic buildings on the site, with other less significant ones earmarked for demolition, with replacement structures retaining the appearance of current structures.
A public exhibition on the apartment scheme took place on 12th December at the nearby St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School, and an online consultation on the plans continues to run until 15th December 2023.
Feedback from the consultation process will help to inform final designs, which are being worked up alongside Stockport Council, local ward councillors and other stakeholders, including the nearby primary school.
If approved, the apartment scheme would add to the list of apartment developments being brought forward in this part of the town centre, such as those being delivered by Hall & Co on Underbanks. On the other side of the town centre, Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation is also facilitating a number of other schemes in its Town Centre West regeneration district, including at Weir Mill, Stockport Interchange, and on former parts of Stockport College’s campus off Wellington Road South and Greek Street.
