UK NEWS UPDATES:
Over one third of working population supported by Government Covid-19 schemes Government support measures brought in to protect workers from job losses during the coronavirus pandemic have helped over one-third of the working population, according to the latest government figures. 14.5 million workers have been supported through a number of schemes set out at the start of the pandemic and in the Chancellor’s Plan for Jobs which was launched last year. The furlough scheme which saw the government pay up to 80% of workers’ wages was the biggest support measure, providing an income to 11.6 million people during the pandemic since its launch. 2.9 million self-employed workers have additionally been provided with £25.2 billion in grants via the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS).
May GDP growth falls short of predictions despite hospitality and retail increase
The UK economy saw slower growth than anticipated in May according to new figures. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has published its latest information on the UK economy, showing a 0.8 per cent growth in May. The figure was just over half of the 1.5 per cent growth predicted by economists and was lower than the 2 per cent growth seen in April. The economy remains 3.1 per cent below its pre-pandemic peak, however in May consumer facing services such as retail and hospitality recovered to their highest level since the start of the pandemic with a 3.2 per cent increase.
BBC: NHS App may be adjusted to reduce number asked to isolate
The NHS contact-tracing app used in England and Wales could soon be made less sensitiveto cut the number of people asked to self-isolate for 10 days. The app detects the time users spend in proximity and currently alerts those who have been within 2m (6ft 6in) of a positive case for more than 15 minutes. However, a source close to Health Secretary Sajid Javid says he’s considering a change, with the number of alerts having risen from 16,000 to 360,000 a week during June. The government says close contacts who are fully vaccinated will not have to isolate after 16 August in England. But BBC analysis shows more than 4.5 million people could be asked to stay at home before then. The hospitality industry and NHS trusts say the knock-on effects could be huge. Dr Jenny Harries, of the UK Health Security Agency, has told MPs there was “work ongoing… because it is entirely possible to tune the app to ensure that it is appropriate to the risk”.
COVID-19 Response: Summer 2021 (Roadmap)
The government has published the ‘COVID-19 Response: Summer 2021’. This document sets out the details of the final roadmap step (Step 4) as we transition out of lockdown: how to stay safe and help prevent the spread guidance – added information on self-isolation exemptions for people who are fully vaccinated or under 18, which comes into effect on 16 August.

Sainsbury’s introduces first fully electric refrigerated trailers to its fleet
Sainsbury’s has become the first UK retailer to introduce fully electric refrigerated trailers to its fleet. The retailer said the trailer aspect of the lorry is 100% electric which means its fridges do not emit carbon emissions or particulate matter such as dust, dirt, soot or smoke into the air. The new technology adds charge back into the battery by converting kinetic energy into electricity. This keeps the onboard fridges cool and reduces energy consumption. Over the next 20 years, Sainsbury’s is planning to invest £1 billion into its operations to eliminate carbon emissions and reduce energy costs.
