Which supermarkets are offering special slots for health workers and elderly shoppers?
Asda:
– exclusive access in larger stores for NHS workers from 8am-9am, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Iceland
– some stores opening early for elderly and vulnerable shoppers; varies by store, so check your local branch for details.
Marks & Spencer
– exclusive access for health and emergency service workers for the first hour of trading on Tuesdays and Fridays.
– exclusive access for elderly and vulnerable customers for the first hour of trading on Mondays and Thursdays.
Morrisons –
exclusive access for NHS workers from 7am-8am every day from Monday to Saturday. All stores will now be open from 7am-8pm every day except Sundays, which will continue to be open for six hours in line with trading rules.
Sainsbury’s
– exclusive access for NHS workers and social care workers from 7.30am-8am every day from Monday to Saturday.
– exclusive access for elderly and disabled people and their carers from 8am-9am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
All stores will be open from 7.30am-8pm Monday-Saturday; Sunday opening hours to remain unchanged.
Tesco (not Express stores)
– exclusive access for NHS workers for a ‘browsing hour’ before checkouts open every Sunday from 22 March.
– exclusive access for elderly and vulnerable customers from 9am to 10am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Supermarkets implement anti-stockpiling measures:
Aldi – four of any item per customer.
Asda – three of any item per customer; two antibacterial hand gels per person.
Iceland – some items, including antibacterial soaps and wipes, restricted. Lidl – four of some items per customer, including household essentials, cleaning products, pasta, rice and tinned goods.
Marks and Spencer – maximum two items per customer of frozen food, home products, groceries and eggs.
Morrisons – maximum three items per customer of any product type.
Ocado – has stopped accepting new customers temporarily and is limiting some products to one or two items per order.
Sainsbury’s – three of any item per customer except some high-demand products, where you’ll be limited to two.
Tesco – three-item limit on all products; no mult-ibuy offers.
Waitrose – three-item limit on all products except toilet roll, which is limited to two packs per in-store customer.
Supermarkets closing cafés and deli counters.
Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco
– are closing their meat, fish and deli counters to allow staff to focus on getting essential food on the shelves.
Waitrose
– is closing its cafés and rotisseries, and is no longer making coffees.
Sainsbury’s
– is asking customers to stay at least one metre away from staff
Tesco is introducing social-distancing measures at checkouts.
In an email to customers, Tesco chief executive, Dave Lewis, said:
‘To help free up slots for the more vulnerable, such as our elderly customers and those who are self-isolating, we are encouraging customers who shop online or choose Click & Collect for their grocery home shopping, to prioritise shopping in store where possible.’
Sainsbury’s
– will be giving online customers who have a disability, or are aged 70 and over, priority access to online delivery slots from Monday.
