Stockport Council has been recommended to approve the development of over 200 new apartments at the former Springmount Mill site off Brinksway in Edgeley.
If approved, proposals will see 202 new apartments developed on the site off Brinksway in Edgeley, close the town centre and just outside of the Mayoral Development Corporation’s Town Centre West regeneration area. The scheme will comprise 37 one-bedroom, 155 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom apartments across two newly built six and eight storey blocks, with associated car parking spaces, 25 EV charging points and cycle storage for residents.
Plans for the scheme were first put forward in 2017, but have been subject to numerous revisions due to damage to the mill buildings, originally proposed to be retained but since demolished entirely, and affordable housing provision.
Despite proposals failing to meet the council’s targets of 20-25% affordable housing for developments in this part of the borough, planning officers at Stockport Council have now given their recommendation that the scheme be progressed by Councillors. Developers, Carpenter Investments, have argued that any affordable housing provision will make the scheme financially unviable.
In their report, planners cite that the benefits of bringing the Springmount Mill plot back into use for housing outweigh the negative impact of continued lack of affordable homes. Section 106 developer contributions to support the creation of public green space in the local community were also stipulated in the region of over £866,000.
Stockport Council’s Central Area Committee will give their recommendations on plans in their next meeting on 1st December, before final approval for the scheme is passed to the Council’s Planning and Highways Regulation Committee.
