UK NEWS UPDATES:
1000 jobs at risk at John Lewis
About 1,000 jobs are at risk at the John Lewis Partnership after the retail business unveiled plans to simplify its management structures in Waitrose and John Lewis. The retail giant, which earlier this year announced plans to close eight of its John Lewis 42 shops, said by reducing the number of layers between its most senior leaders and non-management partners, it would empower front line team members “to deliver what’s best for our customers”. Within Waitrose, many of the managerial posts lost will be replaced by non-management partners. A five-year partnership plan is already in place which requires the business to reduce costs by £300m per year by 2022 to enable investment in the business.
The Balearic Islands will join the list from 04:00 BST on Monday, 15 days after they were moved to the green watchlist. The Scottish and Welsh governments said they will do the same, and Northern Ireland is expected to follow suit. From Monday, only people aged over 18 who are not fully vaccinated will still have to quarantine on returning from an amber list country.

BBC: How five countries fared after easing Covid restrictions
Israel – by mid-June half the population had been jabbed, all restrictions lifted. Delta variant drove daily cases to 754 this week, serious cases remain low. Wearing of face masks is being reinstated and people arriving in Israel must quarantine.
The Netherlands – reopened in late June since when cases have soared but not led to a rise in hospital admissions. Restrictions have been reimposed, 3 weeks after being lifted and will remain in place until 13th August.
South Korea – Reopened in June; experts claim it dropped ist guard too soon with the majority being unvaccinated. Tighetr restrictions now in force
Sweden – relied mainly on voluntary restrictions with some curbs in place but largely loosened. Cases have fallen since the spring due to rising vaccinations and the weather so more people have been socialising outdoors. Travellers are tested on arrival
Australia – For the past year, restrictions have been largely lifted, no face masks and few cases. In the case of an outbreak, local lockdowns were quickly implemented. Perth shut down for 5 days after finding just a single case. Outbreak of Delta variant in Sydney has forced the city into lockdown until at least the end of July. More than 90% of the population remain unvaccinated, largely due to a lack of supplies, especially the Pfizer vaccine.
Overall, it appears the Delta variant is causing a rise in cases globally but, where a high percentage of the populatuion has been vaccinated, severe cases requiring hospital admissions remains low

REGIONAL & LOCAL NEWS:
Face masks to remain mandatory on Metrolink across Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester’s Mayor, Andy Burnham, has announced that face coverings will remain mandatory on the city-region’s Metrolink trams after legal restrictions are lifted on 19th July. Mr Burnham joins other metro-mayors nationwide in retaining mask mandates on city-run public transport, including London Mayor Sadiq Khan who announced earlier this week that masks will be required on all London public transport. The new rules from will come into affect from Monday July 19th, under the Metrolink’s Conditions of Carriage, set by Transport for Greater Manchester, and failure to comply could result in passengers being refused travel and facing a fine of up to £100. Exemptions based on health conditions and for children will remain. Passengers using bus stations and interchanges will also be required to wear face coverings unless exempt.
Net Zero North West report highlights £207 billion green investments in region
A prospectus published by Net Zero North West, an industry-led organisation guiding the region towards reducing CO2 emissions, has highlighted green investments into projects in the North West worth £207 billion. The report, produced by Siemens UK analysts, highlights 18 investment cases for projects in the region that demonstrate the North West’s capabilities for spearheading a ‘green industrial revolution.’ Plans aim to allow the North West to be the first UK region to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040. Projects including a net-zero industrial cluster, and clean energy projects providing tidal power, Liguid-Air Energy Storage and hydrogen production and storage facilities, could also support over 600,000 jobs and add £285 billion to the UK economy.
Stockport residents are being urged to look out for communication from the council in an annual canvass of electoral details, or risk losing their voice in future elections. The 2021 annual canvass ensures that Stockport Council can keep their electoral registration details up-to-date, allowing them to encourage any residents who are not registered to vote to do so. Residents are advised to keep an eye out for communication from Stockport Council, and follow the instructions on any correspondence to ensure that the electoral details for every address in Stockport are kept accurate. If they do not respond to inaccurate information, residents could lose their chance to have their say in important future local and general elections, so it’s crucial that everyone checks that their details are up-to-date.
UK job vacancies climb past pre-pandemic levels
The number of job vacancies in the UK surpassed pre-pandemic levels in the three months to June, according to new data. The Office for National Statistics said there were 862,000 jobs on offer between April and June, 77,500 higher than the first three months of 2020. The rise was driven by vacancies in hospitality and retailing.
The number of people on payrolls also grew in June, showing the biggest rise since the start of the pandemic. It increased by 356,000 in June to 28.9 million.
There was a sharp increase in payrolls in both the food and accommodation sectors as more people returned to work, following a further easing of Covid restrictions in England during May that allowed the hospitality industry to reopen.
