UK NEWS UPDATES:
PM urges caution as Coronavirus restrictions near to being lifted
As Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to confirm plans to lift lockdown in England later, he urges caution and a warning that we “must all take responsibility so we don’t undo our progress, ensuring we continue to protect our NHS”. Almost all legal restrictions on social contact are earmarked to be lifted on 19 July, after the original reopening date on 21 June was postponed. During a news conference later, Mr Johnson will outline the country’s position based on the latest data, which Downing Street says suggests hospital admissions, serious illness and deaths from Covid will continue, but at a lower level than before the vaccination programme. Mr Johnson warns Covid cases, currently at about 30,000 a day, would continue to rise as society reopened but the delay in reopening allowed millions more to be vaccinated.
Early findings bring hope of test for Long Covid
There is no universally agreed definition of Long Covid and it remains somewhat a mystery. But now scientists say they have detected irregularities in the blood of those suffering from the condition, raising hopes this could pave the way for testing for it. There appears to be a pattern of rogue antibodies in the blood of a small number of people with long Covid, researchers at Imperial College London found. This research could lead to a simple blood test within six to 18 months. The early findings are “exciting”, says Dr Elaine Maxwell, from the National Institute of Health Research, but she warns long Covid is a “complex condition”, adding it is important to continue to research.
REGIONAL & LOCAL NEWS:
North West businesses show strength in recovery
Business activity across the North West private sector continued its recovery in June, with the pace of growth easing only slightly from May’s record high, latest UK regional PMI data from NatWest has revealed. However, the data shows that the rebound in activity was accompanied by a record increase in average prices charged for goods and services amid soaring cost pressures. The headline North West Business Activity Index – a seasonally adjusted index that measures the month-on-month change in the combined output of the region’s manufacturing and service sectors – registered 65.0 last month, down slightly from an all-time high of 66.4 in May. Supporting growth in activity was a sustained upturn in inflows of new work, linked to the reopening of the economy and improved confidence among clients.
As lockdown lifts, Stockport’s Director of Public Health warns it’s not without risk With the government set to end Covid-19 restrictions ahead on the 19th July in line with Step 4 of its easement roadmap, Stockport’s Director of Public Health, Jennifer Connolly, has outlined some of the decisions residents will need to make after that date to keep the virus in check in the borough: “While we will all welcome the chance to return to ‘normality’ after so many months living with the pandemic, opening again is not without risk and we must find new ways of living with the virus. The pandemic is far from over. The Delta variant now accounts for 99% of all Covid infections in Stockport, is believed to be around 60% more transmissible than other strains and the number of cases is still rising rapidly, with rates in Stockport currently at 366.7* cases per 100,000 and 154 new cases each day. Rates are especially high in the 10 to 29-year-old age group and also in children aged 0-9.”
The latest published data can be found here. The final decision of what Covid-19 restrictions will be lifted is not set to be announced until this evening (12th July).
Manchester Airport to open flagship Terminal 2 as pandemic forced delay
Manchester Airport has confirmed that its new Terminal Two extension will reopen to passengers from Wednesday 14th July. Jet2 and TUI flights will be the first to take-off from the new-look terminal, with other airlines set to join them as the government’s easing of travel restrictions for fully vaccinated passengers comes into play. The extended Terminal Two is the centrepiece of MAG’s £1bn Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MAN-TP), which was first announced in 2015. The terminal was originally set to reopen to passengers in the summer of 2020; however, this date was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on international travel. To ensure the smoothest possible opening when flying resumes in earnest, MAG has agreed a staggered launch of the terminal with its airline partners. It will see Jet2 start flying from there from 14th July, with just three flights on the first day – to Menorca, Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca.
North West based companies battle through pandemic as insolvency rates fall
The number of North West corporate insolvencies more than halved during the first six months of 2021, according to new data, as the array of government support measures and a supportive lending community helped businesses trade their way through the pandemic. Analysis of notices in The Gazette by Interpath Advisory reveals that 50 companies in the region fell into administration from January to June 2021 – down from 103 in H1 2020 and 125 in H1 2019. The trend mirrors that seen across the UK, with a total of 301 national companies entering administration or receivership during the same period compared to 655 in H1 2020 and 686 in H1 2019.
Infection rates continue to rise across most of Greater Manchester
Oldham has the highest infection rate at 615.7 cases per 100,000 people as of 7th July; in Stockport, the number of cases is up by 18 per cent compared to the previous week – leaving the infection rate at 381.4 cases per 100,000 population.

PROPERTY:
Empty properties – an opportunity for investors and reduced burden on new builds?
The topic of empty homes has long been a contentious one, with many pointing out that existing properties that have fallen into disrepair, aren’t being used by the owner or just can’t be sold could help to ease the UK’s housing crisis without needing to build, build, build. Now insurance firm Admiral has analysed government data, as well as gathering data from local councils through Freedom of Information requests, to investigate where in Britain the most homes have been sitting empty and unused for the longest periods of time. The research highlights the sheer scale of the issue, currently being 341,419 homes across England, Scotland and Wales that have been sitting vacant for at least six months. In total, these homes have a value of £79.2 billion – but where are they located? And could investors take advantage of the opportunities these homes represent?
New figures show 8.5% growth in rental market
Across Great Britain the pace of rental growth continued to climb in June, with rents rising 8.5 per cent year-on-year. The data comes from Connells-owned agency Hamptons. The firm says four of the 10 fastest months for rental growth over the last decade have been since the onset of the pandemic. Stock scarcity has become a pressing issue, with 46 per cent fewer homes on the market than at the same time two years ago. In rural and suburban areas, the drop in rental homes on the market has been even greater.

It could also pave the way for exploration of a wider partnership aimed at building greater awareness and engagement in the US and Canadian market. Under the agreement, ASOS will retain operational and creative control but work with Nordstrom to leverage its US market expertise and extensive customer reach to “build an exciting future” for the brands.
