Stockport employers have now pledged to employ 152 apprentices within 100 days in the scheme run by Stockport Council in partnership with the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS). The target of 100 apprentices was soon reached in early September ahead of target and the campaign will continue until mid-November.
This Monday, October 14th, the Council and NAS will attend an options event at Cheadle Hulme High School where the school will be distributing information packs on post-16 options – including apprenticeships information – to all Year 11 students – in response to the raising of the school leaving age nationally to 18 in 2015.
Headteacher Linda Magrath said : “I am delighted that the Council’s 14-19 Services is providing information packs on options post-16 to all Stockport students. The school is committed to offering independent information, advice and guidance to pupils. Apprenticeships are a valuable offer to young people and can bring new ideas to businesses. We’re offering two apprenticeship opportunities in the school as part of the brilliant 100:100 campaign.”
Councillor Shan Alexander, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Achievement, who is attending the event, added: “It is wonderful news that over 150 young people in Stockport have taken this opportunity to work as apprentices and I hope that this will lead to permanent positions. This ground breaking initiative will help our young people gain confidence and get their first experience of working for a local organisation which in turn will boost the local economy. I would like to thank local employers, large and small and in many different sectors, who are supporting the scheme.”
Claire Robinson, Resource Management Lead for Global Technology Infrastructure Services at Barclays, said: “Now in its fourth year, the Barclays Technical Apprenticeship Programme has recruited over 180 apprentices to date. At Barclays, our doors are wide open for people who are prepared to learn the ropes and work hard even if they have not had a job before, because we want to support them to go on and develop fulfilling careers. Our apprentices make a huge difference to our business from day one and I would encourage any young person to consider the apprenticeship route”
