New paving and lighting is to be installed at Stockport’s Merseyway Shopping Centre as part of the latest phase of improvements to the town centre.
Stockport Council will begin the project from Monday 17th January, with work taking place within Vernon Walk, which connects the main shopping area to Chestergate, running between Primark, Boots and the public toilets.
The Council’s investment in the shopping precinct are part of the town’s wider multi-million pound regeneration of the town centre and will complement ongoing projects for the Stockroom learning and discovery centre and 21st Century library, as well as at the former BHS unit. Works form part of Stockport Council’s ongoing strategy to improve the high street and create a vibrant town centre for residents, visitors and local businesses.
The scheme for Merseyway includes the replacement of the existing paving and waterproofing the roof of the basement below – the River Mersey runs below the shopping centre.
Cllr David Meller, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said:
“We want to encourage people to rediscover the town centre and the start of this project in Merseyway is part of that.
“We have to keep pushing forward with our plans for the town.
“As we’ve shown with our resurfacing work in the Underbanks, projects like this can vastly improve an area. The repaving of Merseyway is just one part of the story to revitalise our town centre and make it a place where people want to live, work, shop and play.”
The Vernon Way improvements will take approximately 12 weeks to complete, with further works in Merseyway set to begin at Easter. Further waterproofing and pavement improvement work will continue on to the section of Deanery Way, between Merseyway and the White Lion, in late February.
