Work has begun on a major project to restore and repair Bramall Hall, preserving the building and its interior for future generations.
The project is being enabled by a £1.6 million funding boost for Stockport Council from Arts Council England’s Museum Estates and Development Fund (MEND). Specialist heritage contractor, Restoration Projects was appointed earlier this year to deliver the work to restore and protect the building from future damage.
Dating back to the Middle Ages, Bramall Hall attracts over 36,000 visitors annually, and is remaining open throughout the restoration work, where the team will share updates on the project’s progress with the public, as well as offer some behind-the-scenes looks at the work being carried out.
Cllr Helen Foster-Grime (pictured), Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport at Stockport Council, recently visited Bramall Hall to check on the progress of the works. Cllr Foster-Grime said:
“Bramall Hall is a vital part of our cultural heritage. The overall substantial investment from the council in the restoration ensures the Hall can continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, safeguarding it for future generations. I’m incredibly impressed by the skill and care the team is applying to preserve the unique architecture and history of this magnificent building – this key project will help preserve one of the borough’s cultural gems for many years to come against the increasing challenges of climate change.”
The roof restoration is expected to continue throughout 2025 and 2026, with sections of the hall remaining accessible to the public where possible.
There will also be an accompanying activities programme called ’Under our Roof’ giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about the architecture, ecology of the building and the impact of climate change.
